I wish I had the patience to write a book… lol It’s one of those things that will probably never happen for me I always start off with great ideas, outline and characters. But, in the end I usually burn out after 25-30 pages….lol hopeless. If there are any authors out there that can give me some words of wisdom I’d love to be inspired

I was laid off on 10/29/08… yep. canned. At the time I was devastated. My wife was almost nine months pregnant. In retrospect I should have tried a little harder to not let it get me down. The good news is that I was only unemployed for 3 days. I must admit though, I would have loved nothing more than to leech off unemployment, but, I decided to do the right thing and go back to work. Personnel Express found a temp job working for a company called CB&I. It was probably the most ridiculous job I’d ever had in my life. Pay was $10 per hour and out of a 40 hour work week I only did about 30 minutes of actual work per day. My boss actually told me to bring a book to work to fight the boredom…. lol I was a timekeeper for different crews that worked on those HUGE power plants. A few days in, someone came into my office and told me a story that changed my life forever. A few coworkers wanted to celebrate another worker who had been with this company for 30 years. You know what the owner told them? “I’m not going to thank that son of a bitch! I gave him a job, didn’t I?” …. That’s when I decided to start my own business and NEVER work for undeserving assholes… ever. Well, I’m on week three and everything is going AWESOME. I’m making more money now than ever before and for once I enjoy work. Waking up for work has never felt this good

Today I’m canceling my World of Warcraft (WOW) subscription. I’ve been playing WOW for about a year and a half now and have become completely immersed into the world of Azeroth.

My current boss introduced me to WOW while we were at a convention in Dallas. At the time I was playing Battlefield 2 a lot and had never even heard of WOW. My boss talked about WOW for 3 hours straight, the guy really loved this game. He sent me a link that night for a 10-day trial and I was instantly hooked. At first, I played the game maybe 5-6 hours a week, but as time passed and my Night Elf Rogue progressed in the game I found myself playing more and more. As time passed I became so excited about getting home to play WOW that I would often log on around 6:00PM and stay connected through the night, logging off around 10:45 (Can’t miss the Daily Show and Colbert Report @11).

Pros:

I’ll start off by saying WOW is a great game! Anyone with an imagination can play the game easily. Even though I’m canceling my subscription, it doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m excited about doing it.

Cons:

You can’t play for a few minutes. That’s what I HATE about WOW!! If you want a game that you can casually log on and load a saved game, WOW is not for you. I think that was one of the main problems I had with the game. Once you’re in the mid to high levels (45-70) it takes 5 min. just to get to your zone. Not to mention the time it takes to check the auction house (AH) and gear up with ammo or potions before you can go out and start killing mobs. Overall it takes me a good 10-15 minutes just to get the grinding wheels turning.

Instances are another thing that made it hard for my Real Life (RL) responsibilities. Instances are parts of the game that require you to group up with other players and work together to reach an objective. Once you are in an instance you CAN NOT leave. I take that back… you can leave but it’s highly looked down upon by your fellow group members. If you leave don’t expect to be asked back by those members for future groups.. I can remember several times that while playing through an instance my wife would come into my office and ask me if I could help her do something. My response would be “Sure let me finish this up and I’ll be right there” unfortunately, instances can take anywhere from 45min – 1 hour to complete. If you’re in a Raid (I never got high enough to experience a raid) it takes about 2-4 hours to complete and 24 other players relying on you as oppose to 4.

Why I enjoy it

It’s too fun. I love watching my characters level up and get better gear. I love learning my characters abilities and countering enemy attacks. I love Player vs. Player (PvP) battlegrounds! To this day when I fight it out with an opposing faction member my adrenaline pumps wildly through my veins!

WOW’s bad reputation

My wife occasionally sends me links that she has found on the Internet about how people have been getting divorced over WOW and how this game can be dangerously addicting. On that note I want to voice a few opinions on the topic of WOW’s negative rep.

First off, I hate nothing more than reading about people that blame WOW for the demise of their marriage! Think about it… If a married couple can let a game destroy their marriage it was bound to happen anyway. Whether it be WOW or a crazy stamp collecting addiction people are always going to blame someone or something else for their problems. They’ll blame everything except the true problem… themselves. It makes me sick! All these housewives crying and complaining about how WOW destroyed their relationship with their husband and vice versa (The wife has been accused of neglecting the husband in some cases). People need to look at the REAL problem. In my case… the problem is my need to be entertained constantly. I’m the type of person that CAN NOT AND WILL NOT watch TV (accept for the Daily show and Colbert Report)

TV is mind numbing for me. Some people (like my wife) can pass several hours watching Oxygen or WE channel and spend all day watching shows like Intervention, Snapped, Dr. Phill and Oprah. She passes the same hours watching TV that I would pass playing WOW. With that said… I’m still canceling my subscription to WOW today. I feel like canceling this game is a great step toward making my wife happier. I do not blame her in any way for my choice to cancel. Some people have a hard time understanding the “NEW” pass time. TV use to rule the American household and in some ways it still does. Hopefully in the coming years everyone will have a better understanding and tolerance for this new form of pass time. Until then it will be deemed a horribly addictive nuisance ruining relationships and the destroyer of marriages. At one time TV had the same bad rep. I remember the term couch potato being used to describe those hopelessly addicted TV addicts! Until some smart person realized that MILLIONS of dollars could be made from advertising on TV. Now it’s not that big of a deal.    

My only regret is that I have decided to cancel my subscription ONE day before the launch of a much-anticipated patch that’s to be released (patch 3.0.2 “Echoes of Doom”) and one month before Wrath of the Lich King hits the shelf.

WOW is not the problem. Broaden your scope a bit and please don’t be so quick to point the finger.

I have a tough time understanding people. I’m involved with many projects that require massive amounts of organization and planning. It never fails. There is always ONE person that completely screws up my schedule. For instance, I’ve been shooting a documentary for over two years now. You have NO idea how many times I’ve driven from Tyler to Athens (45 min drive) based solely on a lead that doesn’t exist, because someone wanted to sound cool and say “ Hey man, I can show you _______”.

It’s like scheduling for a shooting location and the day we’re suppose to shoot the scene, the owner of the building decides to have an air conditioner installed… TOTALLY screwing up the schedule.

I guess that’s just how is goes, but shit!! Is there anyone out there that keeps they’re word!! At least when I screw up someone’s schedule I call in advance.

I’m a normal guy with a normal family and a normal job. I don’t make that much money, but I’m not poor. Myself and the millions like me are getting SCREWED! I don’t make enough money to keep up with the rising prices of gas, food and other daily needs, but I’m not in a annual bracket that would allow financial aid.

I believe that the welfare system is broken… Being that I’m not the kind of person to oppose something without offering some sort of solution (even if the solution is uneducated). Welfare does not encourage people to move forward and make more money for the family. Welfare is  very counterproduction by nature. This broken system actually encourages people to keep the low annual figures so that they may keep the aid that they’ve been accustom to. I realize that there are people in this world that NEED aid. However, a vast majority of aid recipients are able-bodied individual that take advantage of the system.

Normal people with normal jobs

Normal People with Normal Jobs (NPWNJ) are the feeding pool for the welfare leaches. It’s no big secret. I believe that it’s necessary to implement a few rules to help regulate the Welfare leaches. Here’s the rules I think should be strictly enforced for people to qualify for welfare

1.) People drawing welfare should be subject to random drug tests. 

Why I feel this way: I strongly believe that clean drug test results should be a requirement for people to be able to draw welfare or ANY other kind of financial aid. In my experience, people that are using illegal drugs usually lack ambition, motivation and\or have a low quality of life. By implementing this rule we can knock out two birds with one stone, so to speak. crack down on illegal drugs and shorten the welfare line (A ton can be written on this idea, but I’m not going to get to detailed with this entry)

How to make it happen: A lot of people will agree with my statement, but even more will disagree or wonder how I’d go about paying for all these drug tests. Well, I’m not an expert (I’m just a NPWNJ) but here’s how I’d do it. The test will wipe out at least 25% of Welfare recipients in the beginning, so the money that’s saved there should help pay for the tests. Another approach is to have the recipeant PAY for their own test. Federal discounts can be give at bulk rate.  

2.) People drawing welfare should have an aid duration time based on physical condition

Why I feel this way: If someone is physically able to work but refuses, then those people should be cut off entirely. Welfare duration should fluctuate based on the individuals physical condition. This would encourage healthy people to step it up a notch and take pressure of the working class. People that are unhealthy should benefit from longer coverage durations.

How to make this happen: Some may see my approach as insensitive. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to cater to everyones beliefs. 

3.) Aid WILL NOT be automatically give to individuals based on the fact that they are not Caucasian or use English as a second language.

Why I feel this way:I’ve looked into day care (most of you know.. it’s outrageous). A friend of mine was able to get full financial aid because English is a secondary language in his house hold. Even though they are in this country illegally… he is able to get a free ride because English is not his primary spoken language. It sickens me when I think about how much money I’ll have to shell out when my child goes to daycare. It’s money that’s not in my budget… it’s money I don’t have. But, I’ll make it work because that’s my only choice. 

How to make this happen:This one is easy…. If you are not a legal citizen you will NOT benefit from our financial aid programs.   

 This thing could go on and on… but I’m done for now.

I’m nearing a huge crossroads in my life. I’m 26, have a beautiful family and a stale job. I make enough money to provide for my family, but the monotony of my “job” is destroying my happiness. During the week (Mon-Fri \ 8AM-5PM) I drag into work, knowing exactly how my day is going to begin and how it will end. On the weekends I’m a talented filmmaker, I enjoy the challenge of organizing a movie set and directing talented actors. I live the life I want to live on Saturday and Sunday… But, sure enough, Monday comes too soon and I’m forced into the gray world of a guaranteed paycheck (security).

Sometimes I feel like throwing caution to the wind and living a life that makes me happy, but I can’t risk putting my family in financial turmoil. But, I can’t bear the thought dragging through this life feeling unfulfilled. Some people believe in fate and destiny… I personally think fate and destiny are horseshit. You have to work hard to be happy. You can’t just wait around for the time to be right… that time may never come. I guess I’ll continue to pursue my dreams on the weekends and hopefully I can manage this dilemma. On the up side… I know that everyone feels like this at some point in his or her life. It’s the people that remain consistent and fight for their happiness that I respect. Most give up… But, I’m not trading my happiness for a lifetime of monotonous security. 

Well, Sub_American Productions took 2nd place at the DFWindie Film Festival. It’s not 1st, but.. it makes no sense to be greedy.  We got an amazing response so I guess that’s all that matters. We submitted two films, one called “Latency” and the other called “Remain Calm“. It was an amazing rush to see all these people responding to the two films. Haven’t feel this good in a while.

Well, the next project is underway. I wrote a film called “The Sub Rosa Veil”, it’s a conspiracy piece and I hope the response is as good as the previous films.

People piss me off.. I had some guy contact me about making his movie. From the first conversation I could tell that this clown was NOT the kind of person I wanted to collaborate with. For the purpose of telling the story, I’ll call him Bob. In our first phone conversation Bob was rude, arrogant and very unprofessional. Out of some morbid curiosity I humored Bob’s constant blabbering. I really held the conversation to see if he was legit, or if he was just one of those people that talk about how successful they WILL be. Long story short, after our initial conversation I didn’t call Bob back. 

The crazy thing is that one of Bob’s friends, is a really cool person. I invited her to come to the set of one of my short films to help out. I’ll call her Sue, for the sake of storytelling. Sue was professional, intelligent and had a lot of great ideas on set. We shot the film and everyone left happy. Well, a few days later Bob calls me on my cell. Bob says he’s upset that I didn’t call him back, but, he would give me another chance. When he said that I couldn’t believe the arrogance… I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not the best director, DP, screenwriter or anything else, but damn this guy was FULL of shit. Bob asks me why I never called him back and I told him that I caught a bad vibe from our previous conversation. I went on to tell him that in order to collaborate with someone artistically on a project, it’s important that the collaborators have mutual ideas, creative direction and respect for each other.  He agreed and we hung up. Well this morning I had 3 emails from Bob. 

Bob told me his idea for a movie.. basically, it was about a group of teens lost in the woods being pursued by a killer. In a very professional way, I told him that I was not interested. Here’s his response.

Seriously folks.. If you’re interested in shooting a film and you want a collaborator to help make it happen, I’m ALL ABOUT IT. I love art. But if you’re a person that’s never shot a film in your life… DON’T be an arrogant prick to people you want to work with! Even if you’re a celebrated filmmaker.. DON’T be an arrogant prick.

I spilled coffee all down my right side. The coffee wasn’t hot (thank god) but it did leave brown stains on my pants and shirt. I’m glad I drink my coffee black… I still smell horrible though. My boss buys this coffee called Jamaican Blue because he’s a penny pincher…Yeah it pretty raunchy, but it’s not too bad. 

Anyway, I’ve got three different roofing companies looking at my house. I’m trying to decide which one is gonna screw me over for less money. They all seem like decent people but business is tough these days…But I can understand their situation… All self-employed individuals are quaking because of our unstable economy. (Thanks George). My situation looks fairly optimistic.. Just shot a short film over the weekend. Production was fun and everyone had a great time. BUT!!!! Now it’s time to edit. Editing is usually my favorite thing to do. The reason it sucks this time is because I don’t have all the footage I need to complete the film. My good friend Allen directed this particular project, so I blame him. I’m not too worried though. I’ll find some half-ass transition point to substitute for a good one. I’ll composite some crazy shit in After effects to make up for the lack of usable footage. Speaking of unusable footage… I had a few new crewmembers join the Sub_American team for this last project. They were awesome individuals that brought creative ideas and energy to the set. However,…. almost all the footage has boom mic in the frame. I don’t blame the operator, I blame my camera… apparently the actual frame is larger than what the LCD shows. So, literally 85% of the shots have the dipping shotgun mic. But that’s cool.. I’ll fix it with some compositing and digitally remove the mic. You see where I’m going with this???? I have to fix EVERYTHING in post. As if that wasn’t bad enough, I have 8 days to submit this film for a festival in JUNE… yeah, I’m fucked, but I’m happy
