People piss me off.. I had some guy contact me about making his movie. From the first conversation I could tell that this clown was NOT the kind of person I wanted to collaborate with. For the purpose of telling the story, I’ll call him Bob. In our first phone conversation Bob was rude, arrogant and very unprofessional. Out of some morbid curiosity I humored Bob’s constant blabbering. I really held the conversation to see if he was legit, or if he was just one of those people that talk about how successful they WILL be. Long story short, after our initial conversation I didn’t call Bob back.
The crazy thing is that one of Bob’s friends, is a really cool person. I invited her to come to the set of one of my short films to help out. I’ll call her Sue, for the sake of storytelling. Sue was professional, intelligent and had a lot of great ideas on set. We shot the film and everyone left happy. Well, a few days later Bob calls me on my cell. Bob says he’s upset that I didn’t call him back, but, he would give me another chance. When he said that I couldn’t believe the arrogance… I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not the best director, DP, screenwriter or anything else, but damn this guy was FULL of shit. Bob asks me why I never called him back and I told him that I caught a bad vibe from our previous conversation. I went on to tell him that in order to collaborate with someone artistically on a project, it’s important that the collaborators have mutual ideas, creative direction and respect for each other. He agreed and we hung up. Well this morning I had 3 emails from Bob.
Bob told me his idea for a movie.. basically, it was about a group of teens lost in the woods being pursued by a killer. In a very professional way, I told him that I was not interested. Here’s his response.

That’s a load off my mind. Out of my relationship to SUES’s husband, and for no other reason, what I provided you was nothing more than an opportunity to prove yourself to me. You’ve only convinced me that you don’t have what I need in a DP.

I do not have to prove myself to anyone, especially someone looking for a free ride. It was nice talking with you. Good luck with your first film.
END OF EMAIL
Seriously folks.. If you’re interested in shooting a film and you want a collaborator to help make it happen, I’m ALL ABOUT IT. I love art. But if you’re a person that’s never shot a film in your life… DON’T be an arrogant prick to people you want to work with! Even if you’re a celebrated filmmaker.. DON’T be an arrogant prick.
Did you ever go to Cross Roads school? I feel like I have seen you before? If not then I am sure somewhere at Athens, or a mutual friend… Something lol. I have watched your videos on Fuller Park and the Country Club, they are VERY interesting. Me and a friend are very interested in that stuff and are doing research on the above. Any help as to where you found your info?? You ever thought of letting people “tag-along”, if you will, on a trip to the park or the old hospital? Just curious.
. Anyway, your work is great, keep it up… Very interesting. And your blogs rock lol.
My other myspace is http://www.myspace.com/autumncambra, just in case you can’t get one or the other lol…..
Thanks for the kind words!! I have a blog specifically for the documentary we’re shooting titled Black of Day: The Dark History of Athens, TX. Here’s the URL http://blackofday.wordpress.com
Most of the info I learned regarding the dark history of Athens, TX was from first hand accounts and historical documents. You can find a ton of info in the library archives, courthouse archives and even books that have been published. The local newspaper is a decent source too. But the best info comes from going out and doing the physical research… sleuth type stuff. We’ve been filming this documentary going on two years now. The first year was amazing! We recovered a ton of info and interviews! We decided to move on to a few unrelated projects to suppress the monotony of the constant research. We are about to fire up the final round on this documentary before releasing all the info to the public in the form of a DVD. We have decided that we WILL premier the documentary once the final touches are completed. I think people (Especially locals) will be VERY happy with the documentary.
Thanks!
Justin
